Telatie - The Duckboard Trail

The historical duckboard trail called "Telatie" running between the villages of Kurtakko and Venejärvi in Finland's greatest swamp Teuravuoma, is being reconstructed to make benefit the countryside and walkers who enjoy the unique swamp environment.

The eleven kilometre route was first constructed in 1878 to link the two villages for the postal service, hunting, fishing, berry picking and as a public thoroughfare to the marsh meadows of River Naamijoki, from which hay was collected for the animals. To this day, the marsh meadows still have some meadow cabins and barns dating back to the beginning of the nineteenth century.

By its natural value, the Suur-Teuravuoma region is a valuable swamp expanse with its diverse range of bog types providing home to the large numbers of birds and animals. Especially in the central part of the Teuravuoma-Kivijärvenvuoma (included in the EU's NATURA 2000 programme), you can admire the blue tints of the Ylläs fells. The villages at the end of the trail are Kurtakko, Venejärvi and Teurajärvi. Building started in spring 2000 and the route has been finished in autumn 2002.

Welcome to refresh and relax yourselves in the swamp!
